1. Policy Statement
The Michael Anoka Foundation is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare and rights of all individuals, particularly children, young people, and vulnerable adults who come into contact with the Foundation. We believe that all individuals, regardless of age, ability, gender, ethnicity, religion, or background, have the right to be protected from harm, abuse, and exploitation.
2. Purpose of the Policy
This policy aims to:
• Provide clear guidance to staff, volunteers, trustees, and partners on the Foundation’s approach to safeguarding.
• Ensure appropriate action is taken in the event of suspected or actual harm or abuse.
• Promote a culture of safety, trust, and accountability.
3. Scope
This policy applies to:
• All staff (paid and unpaid), volunteers, board members, and anyone acting on behalf of the Michael Anoka Foundation.
• All individuals and communities we serve, especially children, young people, and vulnerable adults.
4. Definitions
• Child: Anyone under the age of 18.
• Vulnerable Adult: A person aged 18 or over who may be unable to care for themselves or protect themselves from harm or exploitation.
• Abuse: Any action or lack of action that causes harm or distress to another individual, including physical, emotional, sexual abuse, neglect, or exploitation.
5. Responsibilities
• The Board of Trustees: Has ultimate responsibility for safeguarding.
• Safeguarding Officer: A designated individual responsible for implementing this policy and handling concerns or allegations.
• All Staff and Volunteers: Are responsible for being vigilant and reporting concerns immediately.
6. Code of Conduct
All representatives of the Foundation must:
• Treat everyone with respect and dignity.
• Prioritise the safety and well-being of all individuals.
• Avoid being alone with a child or vulnerable adult whenever possible.
• Never engage in any form of abuse or exploitation.
• Report any safeguarding concerns immediately.
7. Recruitment and Training
• All staff and volunteers will undergo background checks (e.g., police clearance, references).
• Safeguarding training will be provided during onboarding and refreshed regularly.
8. Reporting Concerns
Any safeguarding concerns should be reported immediately to the Safeguarding Officer or any senior member of the Foundation. All reports will be handled sensitively and in accordance with data protection laws.

9. Confidentiality and Data Protection
All safeguarding concerns will be treated in strict confidence and only shared with relevant individuals or authorities on a need-to-know basis.
10. Monitoring and Review
This policy will be reviewed annually or sooner if required due to changes in legislation or organisational structure.
